Welcome message from school principal
Welcome to the Big River High School page!
Take time to explore. As we continue to develop the site, we’ll add more information to keep you updated on what’s happening in classes and across the school. Our goal remains the same: to help each student grow and succeed within and beyond the Cree Nation.
Success for each student is based on our core values: Accountability, Respect, and Teamwork.
These values guide our decisions, shape our relationships, and help create a thriving school environment. Everyone plays a role in building a place where students feel safe, supported, and able to learn. We want Big River High to be a space where students succeed, feel well, and enjoy their time here.

Concentration and Option Classes
Our concentration and option classes were created to increase student engagement, give students more autonomy, and make learning fun. These classes bring students and teachers together in creative, hands-on activities that promote growth inside and outside the classroom.
Designed by the Cree School Board, the concentration and option classes include:
- MikwChiyâm
- Volleyball
- Fitness
- Additional Cree culture classes
Mikw Chiyâm
An arts program that brings professional artists into schools. Students explore music, visual arts, spoken word, and more while building skills and confidence.
Volleyball
Students spend four periods learning the basics of volleyball, improving their skills, fitness, and teamwork on and off the court.
Fitness
Focuses on physical health and activity through strength training, cardio, and wellness practices that build discipline and healthy living.
Cree Culture
Students learn language, traditional knowledge, and land-based skills. These classes help them stay connected to who they are as Cree people.
Greenhouse Project
The project began in 2014 as a collaboration between the school and Nihtaauchin Chisasibi Center for Sustainability, when the first greenhouse was built in James Bay Eeyou School.
Today, the new school includes an in-house greenhouse where students can learn in a classroom setting. This work now continues in partnership with the Chisasibi Eeyou Resource and Research Institute (CERRI), which supports student learning. The greenhouse gives students the chance to learn about vegetable production while also promoting healthy eating and food security in the north.
