Local Assistance & Inter-Community Programs

The Cree School Board ensures educational access for JBNQA Cree Beneficiaries while preserving traditional values. Through the Local Educational Assistance Program, students can attend CSB schools when parents are away for traditional activities. The Inter-Community Sports and Schooling Programs ensure students can pursue athletic goals and access education when specific programs are unavailable in their home community.

The following apply to all programs:

  • Parents of the student have, among other conditions, to be domiciled in one of the 9 Cree communities.
  • Students/parent shall not receive funding from any other sources for the same expenses.
Local Educational

Assistance Program

Allow JBNQA Cree Beneficiaries students to attend CSB schools while their parents are temporarily outside the community for reasons such as subsistence harvesting and practice other iiyiyiu traditional activities in iiyiyiu aschii or studies.


Eligibility

  • Student and his caregivers are domiciled in one of the 9 Cree communities and at least one of them is a JBNQA Cree Beneficiary;
  • Parents are:
    1. both absent from their community and are under the Cree Hunters and Trappers Income Security Program; or
    2. both absent from their community and receive minimum assistance or are unemployed, while practicing occasional subsistence harvesting or other iiyiyiu traditional activities in iiyiyiu aschii for at least 10 consecutive days; or
    3. both temporarily residing outside their community and enrolled in a full-time program in a recognized institution; however, if one of the parents is not enrolled in such program but is mainly taking care of the child(ren) residing with them at the location of studies, the funding may be granted for their child(ren) remaining in the community;
  • CSB will not provide funding under the Program when:
    1. parents are entitled to funding from another source for childcare;
    2. student could be transported daily to school from the location where his parents are, if less than 50 km away with a road access.

Inter-Community

Sports Program

Allow JBNQA Cree Beneficiaries who are performing at a high level in a specific sport to pursue their objectives in their sport without compromising their academic objectives


Eligibility

Parents
  • Parents are domiciled in one of the 9 Cree communities and at least one of them is a JBNQA Cree Beneficiary or both are absent from the community as PSSS students.
Student must:
  • Be enrolled at the primary or secondary level in a CSB school;
  • Has and maintains at least 70% in 3 core subjects.;
  • Demonstrates highly advanced skills and abilities in the field of sports as expressed in a letter of reference from a coach;
  • Performs at a higher level in his sport discipline than what is available in his home community;
  • Has successfully completed the previous school year in any CSB Educational Assistance Program, if he was already enrolled in such program.

The student will complete his studies for the entire school year in the host community.

Application

The league or sports association must forward a letter of intent to the School Administration of the host community with a copy to the Office of School Operations by February 15th providing the information
on the additional student clientele for the coming school year.

Parents must forward a letter of intent to the SAT of the host community or to Student Services if the location is not determined as soon as possible but not later than April 30th informing the Board of their possible application for the Program for the coming school year.

Parents must submit their official application to the Program as soon as possible but no later than August 1st to the SAT of the host community. However, if the parents are yet to receive a confirmation from the league (due to late tryouts, etc.) the deadline may be moved to September 15th.

The following information or documents have to be provided and attached to the application:

  • the last report card issued of the current year;
  • the final report card of the previous year;
  • the final complete report card of the current school year (as soon as available);
  • student’s birth certificate;
  • letter of reference from a coach or organization regarding sports performance from the previous school year.

Inter-Community

Schooling Program

The Cree School Board recognizes the importance of maintaining the access to education to all JBNQA Cree Beneficiaries when a teaching grade level sector or academic programs are not offered in their home community.


Eligibility

  • parents are domiciled in one of the 9 Cree communities and at least one of them is a JBNQA Cree Beneficiary or both are absent from the community as PSSS students;
  • the student will complete his studies for the entire school year in the host community;
  • Moreover, the student must be in one of the following situations:
    1. his grade level or sector is not offered in his home community;
    2. the academic subject required is not offered in his home community;
    3. he qualifies for the Local Educational Assistance Program and there is no appropriate long-term boarding home available in his home community.

Application

The parents should send a letter of intent to the School Administration of the host community as soon as possible but no later than April 30th with a copy to the Office of School Operation informing the school that they might apply for the Program for the coming school year.

Parents must submit their official application to the Program as soon as possible but no later than June 1st to the School Administration of the host community.

The following information and documents must be provided and attached to the application:

  • the last report card issued of the current year;
  • the final report card of the previous year;
  • the final complete report card of the current school
    year (as soon as available);
  • student’s birth certificate;
  • a written confirmation by their home community School Administration that one of the reasons listed (a, b or c) is met.
