Off-Community Programs

The Cree School Board recognizes the importance of maintaining access to education to all JBNQA Cree Beneficiaries with highly advanced skills and abilities, or who require Special Education services that are not accessible in their home community. The CSB wishes to provide assistance through its Off-Community Programs to allow these students to attend schools outside the 9 Cree communities.

The Regional Office of Student Engagement & Services oversees the following Off-Community Programs.

The following apply to all Off-Community programs:

  • Parents are domiciled in one of the 9 Cree communities and at least one of them is a JBNQA Cree Beneficiary.
  • Successfully completed the previous school year in any CSB Educational Assistance Program if he was already enrolled in such program.
Off-Community

Sports Program

Allow JBNQA Cree Beneficiaries who have highly advanced skills in a specific sport to pursue their objectives in their sport in the localities where provided, without compromising their academic objectives. The CSB emphasizes the importance of education while supporting the students in their athletic endeavors.


Eligibility

The student must:
  • Be enrolled in a primary or secondary sector.
  • Has and maintains at least 70% in 3 core subjects
  • Complete his studies for the entire school year in the Program.
  • Demonstrates highly advanced skills in sports as expressed in a letter of reference from a coach.
  • Performs at a higher level in his sport discipline than what is available in his home community.

Priority should be given to Inter-city leagues or public institution located in the province of Quebec.

Application

Parents must forward a letter of intent to the Regional Student Services at , no later than April 30th.

Official application to the Program must be sent by September 15th to the Regional Student Services. The following documents must be included:

  • confirmation letter of the selection/recruitment from the inter-city league and/or from the institution attended;
  • final report card from the previous school year;
  • last report card issued of the current school year. The final complete report card of the current school year must also be submitted as soon as available;
  • student’s birth certificate;
  • letter of reference regarding academic achievement from the School Principal or Vice-Principal from the previous school year;
  • letter of reference from a coach regarding sports performance within the last year.

  • Boarding Home Room and Board
  • Student Additional Allowances

Parents are responsible in finding an adequate boarding home for their child. However, if funding is provided in this respect, the boarding home may have to meet certain criteria as established in the Boarding Homes Policy.

Off-Community

Secondary Education Program

The Cree School Board recognizes the importance of maintaining the access to education to all JBNQA Cree Beneficiaries with highly advanced skills and abilities in the fields of academics or arts.


Eligibility

The student must:
For Academic Programs
  • Be enrolled in the secondary sector;
  • Have and maintain throughout the Program a high level of academic performance with an overall average of 75% in core subjects;
  • Have a minimum of 90% attendance rate, according to the current school year report card.
For Arts Programs
  • Be enrolled in the secondary sector;
  • Demonstrate outstanding ability in one of or more of the fine arts, visual arts, dance, drama or music;
  • Maintain a passing academic average;
  • Have as an annual attendance record of 90%

Application

Official application to the Program must be sent by April 30th to the Regional Student Services at . The following information and documents must be provided and attached to the application:

  • letter explaining the reasons for the request;
  • letter of reference regarding academic achievement from the School Principal of Vice-Principal from the current school year;
  • final report card of the 2 previous school years;
  • last report card issued of the current school year. The final complete report card of the current school year must be submitted as soon as available;
  • student’s birth certificate;
  • proof of registration from the accredited institution, as soon as received;
  • letter of recommendation regarding ability in the arts, from an appropriate person who can testify of his ability (teacher, school principal or artists).

Off-Community

Private Secondary Education Program

The Cree School Board recognizes the importance of JBNQA Cree Beneficiaries with highly advanced academic skills and abilities to have the opportunity to access Private Secondary Education.


Eligibility

The student must:
  • Reside outside the 9 Cree communities due to employment with a Cree entity or studying under the CSB Post-Secondary Program;
  • Demonstrate outstanding capabilities to perform in enriched and advanced educational programs;
  • Have a yearly overall average of 75% in core subjects at the time of application;
  • Maintain during the Program a yearly overall average of at least 60% and showing a progression from grade to grade;
  • Have a minimum of 90% attendance rate according to the current school year report card;
  • Priority will be given to enriched and advanced educational programs in an accredited private secondary institution located in the province of Quebec.

Application

The letter of intent to the Program must be sent by April 30th to the Regional Student Services at .

The official application must be submitted by July 30th and the following documents must be attached to the application:

  • letter of reference regarding academic achievement from the School Principal of Vice-Principal for the current school year;
  • final report card of the previous school year;
  • last report card issued of the current school year. The final complete report card of the current school year must also be submitted as soon as available;
  • student’s birth certificate (at initial application only);
  • letter of acceptance from the accredited private
    secondary institution.

  • 75% for educational tuition fees
  • Residence Fees @ Room and Board rate
Off-Community

Special Education Funding Program

The Cree School Board recognizes the importance of maintaining the access to education to all JBNQA Cree Beneficiaries to those who require Special Education services that are not accessible in their home community.


Eligibility

  • The student and his caregivers are domiciled in one of the 9 Cree communities and at least one of them is a JBNQA Cree Beneficiary;
  • The educational programming or specialized professional services necessary to support his education are not currently available in the school or community;
  • The CSB Coordinator of Special Education Services provides a positive recommendation to Student Services requiring special educational services Off-Community;
  • The student has completed the previous school year in any CSB Educational Assistance Program, if he was already enrolled in such program;
  • The student shall attend a Recognized Institution located in the province of Quebec;
  • The students shall not receive funding from any other sources for the same expenses covered.

Application

The application must be submitted as soon as possible and not later than April 30th unless their child is diagnosed or his educational needs change after that date in which case, the deadline may be waived by the Director. The following information and documents must be provided by the caregivers and attached to the application:

  • a letter explaining the reasons for the request;
  • the most recent evaluation report from a professional;
  • the institution they would like their child to attend;
  • If applicable:
    • a) most recent Individual Education Plan (IEP)
    • b) final report card of the previous school year
    • c) the last report card issued of the current school year. The final complete report card of the current school year must also be submitted as soon as available;
    • d) an authorization given to the CSB to be able to obtain the report cards directly from the Institution.
  • student’s birth certificate;
  • proof of registration from the recognized Institution, as soon as received Student Engagement & Services and/or the Coordinator of Special Education Services may require the caregivers to provide any additional document, or information or more recent professional report, etc.
