3rd Regional Assembly on Education draws close to 200 delegates

About 200 delegates from around Eeyou Istchee are gathering in Oujé-Bougoumou for two days to discuss the theme “Let’s Strengthen Cree Language and Culture.”

The biennial Regional General Assembly kicked off at 9:30 a.m. February 26 at Petabin Youth Centre in Oujé-Bougoumou.

“We are inspired by the momentum in our territory in support of our traditional way of life and language,” says Director General Abraham Jolly. “Our reporting at this assembly will focus on these important pursuits, and we will engage in conversations with our education partners on how we can further advance in these areas.”

Representatives of each community, including students, Elders and Band Council members, will attend the event, which will include a feast on the evening of February 26 featuring Dr. Kevin Brousseau. Dr. Brousseau is currently finishing his medical residency. He was supported by the Cree School Board to attain his education and has become a strong advocate for Indigenous language and culture.

The 2020 Regional General Assembly on Education is the third RGA hosted by the Cree School Board. The first was in 2016 in Mistissini; the second was held as part of the Board’s 40th anniversary celebration in Eastmain in 2018.
