Art Concentration Program engages WES Students

For the past four years, Wabannutao Eeyou School students have had the opportunity to participate in a Concentration Program. Students from Grade 5 to Secondary 2, chose to participate in Art, Cree Culture, Science or Sports for 6 periods in a 6 day cycle.
This year’s Art Concentration has teamed up with the Mikw Chiyam Program and has been a tremendous success. To date, students in conjunction with their teacher, Diana Roldan, and the Mikw Chiyam artists have had the opportunity to host two local Art Shows displaying their artistic talents, and telling their stories through their work.
“Having the opportunity to awaken joy, and witness student’s creativity is such a rewarding experience. Our classroom not only offers a safe place to explore art but it also provides our youth with alternative ways to freely express with brushes and paint what would be hard to say with words. It gives them chances to feel empowered, supported and represented” says teacher Diana Roldan.
Principal Trevor Mercer noted that “the Art program gives students who are not athletically inclined to have something to look forward to on a regular basis.”
