Stronger Together Symposium Supports Families of Children with Special Needs

The Cree School Board, together with parents and guardians of children and adults with special needs, came together once again on December 3-4, 2025 to host the Stronger Together Symposium. Guided by the vision of becoming ᒫᒨ ᒪᔥᑰᑳᐴᐦᑖᐤ, Stronger Together, the event created a safe and welcoming space for families to learn, connect, and build lasting support networks.

STS Slogan 2025This year’s symposium focused on practical tools and shared knowledge. Parents and guardians took part in hands-on workshops, presentations, and sharing circles led by educators, specialists, Elders, and frontline professionals. Sessions explored topics such as accessing services, supporting student well-being, strengthening communication at home and at school, and understanding the changing needs of learners with diverse abilities.

A central focus throughout the event was ensuring families feel informed, confident, and supported in guiding their child’s learning. Participants asked questions, shared experiences, and learned more about education, health, and community wellness supports available across the region. The presence of Knowledge Keepers and Elders grounded the symposium in Cree culture, reinforcing the importance of identity, language, and traditional ways of caring for one another.

The Stronger Together Symposium also provided an opportunity for the Cree School Board, the Cree Nation Government, and the Cree Board of Health and Social Services of James Bay to reaffirm their shared commitment to working together to strengthen programs and services for parents and guardians across iiyiyiu aschii.

Let’s leave here with the empowerment and commitment that all our children’s needs are met,” said Dr. Sarah Pashagumskum, Chairperson of the Cree School Board.

As the event concluded, parents, guardians, and service providers left with stronger connections, increased confidence, and a shared understanding that when families, schools, and communities work together, every child can thrive.
