A New Chapter in Adult Learning in iiyiyiu aschii: Sabtuan Learning Centre Coming to Chisasibi
The Cree School Board is proud to announce the construction of the Chisasibi Sabtuan Learning Centre. The work is planned to begin in the summer of 2026.
This modern facility will be a vibrant hub for adult learners, a place where community members can gain new skills and explore career paths. Designed with Cree values and goals in mind, the Centre will offer programs in trades, technology, healthcare, and more. From welding and carpentry to professional cooking and heavy equipment mechanics, adult learners will have access to hands-on training that prepares them for real-world success.
The Centre will be found across the street from Big River High School. It will feature an elders’ room, a space for intergenerational learning, and cultural connection. It’s a place where tradition will meet innovation, and where every adult learner will be supported in their journey.
“The Centre will provide a space that empowers Cree learners with the knowledge, confidence and leadership skills needed to contribute to the growth and wellbeing of the community. Our Adult Education and Vocation Training initiatives are necessary to Cree capacity development and to ensuring the development needs of our communities are met," said Dr. Sarah Pashagumskum, Chairperson of the Cree School Board
Caroline Mark, Director General of the Cree School Board, added, “Whether in trades, technology or other fields, our mission is to equip iiyiyyiu and innuu with the skills and knowledge they need to thrive within our communities.”
With construction on the horizon, the new Sabtuan Adult Learning Centre in Chisasibi marks a powerful step forward in lifelong learning. The goal is to have Adult Learning Centres in all communities in iiyiyiu aschii.
