On behalf of the Cree School Board, we would like to provide an official update regarding the situation at Voyageur Memorial High School in Mistissini, iiyiyiu aschii.

On August 26, 2025, a brief floor movement was reported near the main entrance of the school. Staff members observed cracks in the canteen, gymnasium, and stairwell areas. As a precautionary measure, the school was immediately evacuated and closed while professional assessments were carried out.

Following a thorough inspection by certified structural engineers, we are pleased to confirm that Voyageur Memorial High School is structurally safe. The school has reopened, and students and staff can return to their classrooms with confidence. Preventive maintenance and regular monitoring will continue to ensure ongoing safety and security.

During the closure, contingency plans were in place to support our students’ learning in the event of a longer-term disruption. We wish to extend our sincere appreciation to all those who worked tirelessly during this time. We acknowledge the dedication and commitment of the Deputy Director General (Operations) and the team, the Deputy Director General (Pedagogy) and the team, the Material Resources Department, the Information and Technologies Department, the Voyageur Memorial High School leadership, our teachers, the maintenance crew, and support staff. Their swift action, collaboration, and long hours ensured both the safety of our community and the continuity of education.

We also wish to thank parents, students, and the community of Mistissini for their patience, understanding, and trust throughout this process. The safety and well-being of our students remain our highest priority, and this incident demonstrated the strength and resilience of our school community.
