Literacy Spotlight: February/March 2026 Celebrations

Building Literacy Success Together. This Literacy Spotlight celebrates the success of our Structured Early Literacy Plan (SELP), our Professional Learning Communities (PLC), the strategies and practices being put into action across Cree School Board schools.

The Response to Intervention (RTI) team is working hard to showcase the meaningful work happening in our schools and classrooms to strengthen literacy programs. The hope is that these highlights will support a shared understanding of how we are moving forward to help our students continue to grow as confident, successful readers.

SELP Team (Structured Early Literacy Plan) Grade 1 to 3

The team at WES has had an exciting first year with the Heggerty and UFLI literacy programs in Grades 1–3. These programs help students build important reading skills in phonics, decoding, phonological awareness, and give them a strong foundation as they grow as readers.

Students are noticing connections between what they’re learning in UFLI and their Lexia lessons — one even said, “This is the same thing I’ve been working on in Lexia!

Jimmy Jam Sessions, Grade 1 to 3

At Luke Mettaweskum School in Nemaska they have three additional afternoon literacy periods in a six-day cycle where students are regrouped based on reading levels. These groups are carefully created using data from assessments and other reading measures.

The ELMS team meets, reviews the data together, and collaborates to decide on the “Jimmy Jam” groups. It is built on teamwork, trust, shared responsibility, and a commitment to making sure every student’s literacy instruction is at their level.

Jimmy Jam sessions continue to be a highlight at ELMS and are a larger part of the school culture. They demonstrate a strong example of collaboration and prove that everyone working together to support student literacy growth is essential to student success.

Jimmy Jam sessions have been at ELMS for many years, and we work together to discuss student growth and make changes to our groups when needed.

School Celebrations, Lexia Core 5

At Badabin Eeyou School, students’ hard work in LexiaCore5 Reading is proudly celebrated.

“Each month at our assemblies, students proudly come forward to accept their Lexia certificates, and the pride in the room is amazing. Their smiles say it all as the crowd cheers and celebrates their achievements.”

Lexia Core5 Reading supports students from Grade 1 to Grade 5/6 in building strong reading skills. It focuses on sounds, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and breaking words into parts. The program meets students at their level and helps them grow into confident readers.

Monthly assemblies highlight their dedication and the school’s commitment to the Cree School Board literacy initiatives.

We look forward to featuring more highlights and sharing stories from schools across the CSB. If you have any questions, or a story you’d like to share with us, please email our department at:
