This week, we mourn the passing of two cherished members of the Cree School Board family: Velma Pepabano-House and Thomas Coon. Their enduring contributions, leadership, and unwavering commitment have left a profound mark on our schools, our communities, and the lives of countless students and staff.

Velma Pepabano HouseVelma Pepabano-House, from Chisasibi, served with dedication in various roles within our schools and in the Educational and Student Services departments. She was instrumental in shaping initiatives that continue to support our students today, including the milk program and efforts to make our school libraries safe, welcoming spaces. Velma will be most remembered for her warmth, her ability to connect with others, and her deep care for students and staff alike. Through her tireless efforts and genuine presence, she helped foster a sense of trust, community, and cultural pride within our schools.

Thomas CoonThomas Coon, from Mistissini, was a respected elder, mentor, and steadfast supporter of the Cree School Board. A passionate advocate for the protection and promotion of Cree language and culture, he was always generous in sharing his wisdom with students, staff, and parents. His commitment to cultural preservation was evident in his active involvement in the Cree Component working group, and as a founding member of the Cree Trappers’ Association. Throughout his life, Thomas remained a strong defender of Cree rights and the heritage of iiyiyiu aschii.

The Cree School Board is stronger and richer for the contributions of Velma and Thomas. Their legacy will continue to inspire and guide us. We extend our deepest condolences and heartfelt gratitude to their families, loved ones, and all who were touched by their lives.

May their memories be a blessing and their spirits live on in the work we continue.
