In memory of late Jane Longchap St-Gelais

Jane was a dedicated Cree Language teacher with the Cree School Board at Waapihtiiwewan School in Oujé-Bougoumou since 1999. Her work began as a substitute teacher from August 18, 1999 to December 6, 1999. 

She then served as a Cree Culture Teacher from December 7, 1999 to June 30, 2011. From July 1, 2011 to January 23, 2016, she taught at the elementary level. From January 24, 2016 to June 30, 2020, she taught at the secondary level. She retired on July 1, 2020 after many years of carrying our language for her students and community.

She was a compassionate teacher to students and staff. People who knew her described her as kind, caring, and always ready to support others. Jane was patient, loving, and joyful in everything she brought to the school.

She also took part in the McGill University Cree Literacy program as a Cree Language professor, helping many students who are now Cree teachers in our schools.

Jane was always ready to help and guide anyone in our board who worked to sustain our Cree language and culture. She will be missed and will not be forgotten. Her knowledge and her hopes for our language continue through the people she taught and supported.
