Celebrating the 2nd Edition Higher Learning, Building Capacity Conference
The Cree School Board (CSB) Adult & Higher Learning sector hosted the 2nd Edition Higher Learning, Building Capacity Conference from February 20 to 22 at the Rogers Centre in Ottawa.
Close to 300 students attended the three-day event. Students from Post-Secondary Student Service, Higher Learning, and Sabtuan Adult Education Services travelled from across iiyiyiu aschii and off-territory to participate.
The event was symbolized by the niimuutaan — a traditional packsack used to carry the tools needed for a journey. The conference helped students gather tools, knowledge, and connections to support their education and future careers.
Over the weekend, students participated in panels, workshops, and exhibitor visits. A key message shared throughout the conference was the importance of iiyiyu control over education and the responsibility to continue building strong systems for future generations.
CSB Chairperson Dr. Sarah Pashagumskum reflected this message, saying, “We are moving forward toward realizing our nation’s dream of having our own college and university system.”
The conference continues to create space for students to learn, connect, and grow, strengthening higher learning across our communities and supporting the next generation of leaders.
