Eeyou Leader Rusty Cheezo laid to rest
The Cree School Board mourns the passing of Rusty Cheezo on October 27, 2020. Rusty was a valued member of Eeyou Istchee, including the Cree School Board. He worked as a School Commissioner for Eastmain (1989-1992 and 1992-1995). At the same time, Cheezo worked as a Vice-Chairperson between his terms (1990-1991 and 1993-1995), and Chairperson (1999-2000) of the Cree School Board.
Rusty served as the Chief and Deputy Chief of the Cree Nation of Eastmain for 22 years. He was also a Chairman of the Board of Compensation, a President and Board member of CreeCo.
“During his term, he was very dedicated towards the education of the students,” said Bella Mianscum, CSB’s former Secretary General, and longtime friend to Rusty and his wife Margaret, “He was always available for meetings and made every effort to be present.”
Rusty was described as kind, caring, and generous, who had strong connections to his community. He was known to be a huge NHL Montreal Canadiens fan.
Everyone at the Cree School Board will truly miss Rusty.
We send our sincerest condolences to his surviving family: his wife, Margaret (Wesley) Cheezo, who recently retired from Cree School Board, his sons Russell, late Robert, his daughters Renata, Sophia, and his three grandchildren. We also extend condolences to his friends, of which there were many and to his Eastmain community.
