Celebrating iiyiyiu/iinuu Education in Chisasibi
On November 7, 2025, the community of Chisasibi proudly celebrated the official opening of its two new schools — Big River High School and Upichinaausiuun Chiskutimatukimikw School. The event brought together students, educators, elders, and leaders to mark a milestone for iiyiyiu/iinuu education.
Speeches from local and regional representatives, along with performances by local drummers, reflected the community’s pride and unity. Chairperson Dr. Sarah Pashagumskum and Director General Caroline Mark highlighted the schools as symbols of progress and identity. “These new schools represent an era when a truly iiyiyiu/iinuu education is possible,” said Dr. Pashagumskum.
Built with both innovation and tradition in mind, the schools feature Cree language and land-based learning spaces designed to nurture culture and learning. The opening marks not just new buildings, but a renewed commitment to education that reflects the heart, language, and spirit of the Cree Nation.
