Adult29th Annual Regional Annie Whiskeychan Day
Students from across iiyiyiu aschii flew to Whapmagoostui for the Cree School Board 2026 Regional Annie Whiskeychan Day events hosted on May 27, 2026. Annie Whiskeychan was an important champion of iiyiyiu education. Each year, we honour her contributions with a day of cultural games, activities, and competitions at the local level, and regionally.
This year, the regional events were hosted at the cultural camp through the joint efforts of host Badabin Eeyou School along with the help of Amy Salt, Coordinator of the Cultural Program, and the rest of the Whapmagoostui Cultural Department.
About 100 guests and community members were led in an opening prayer by Elder Lucy Petagumskum and drumming by Leonel Weapenicappo, before the games were declared started by Elder Agnes Shem.
This year, elementary school students competed in:
- Baby Wrapping,
- Goose Calling,
- Girl’s Bough Carrying,
- Matching Game,
- Target Shooting.
While secondary school students competed in:
- Goose Calling,
- Bough/Wood Carrying,
- sakapwaan,
- Spelling Bee,
- Matching Game,
- Boy’s Target Shooting,
- And Girl’s Bough Laying.
Throughout the day, students were given the opportunity to learn new skills from the chaperones and elders around them.
The day’s events ended at the arena complex for a banquet and awards ceremony led by emcee Crystal Bobbish. Guests were led in a prayer by Elder Emily Rupert, local students and fiddlers provided musical entertainment, and Elder Agnes Shem spoke to the students about the importance of maintaining iiyiyiuiyihtiwin.
