Roast Meat on a String

Before roasting hooks ᓴᑲᐧᐹᑲᓂᒡ / ᓯᑭᐧᐹᑭᓂᒡ were used, people made roasting tools from various tree materials.
Different shapes were crafted for roasting food over the fire. One tool was shaped like a beaver tail with a hole in it.
All kinds of meat was roasted by the fire. Bear feet was roasted and was very soft.
Fish was roasted by the fire using birch bark to hold the fish in place, they wrapped the fish around with the birch bark.
They used willow bark stripped ᓂᐱᓰᐅᔮᐲ / ᓂᐲᔒᐧᐋᔮᐲ to hand food to roast by the fire.
There is a certain type of willow bark that is long that can be used as a string.
They would only take it out when it was ready for use.
There are many different types of roots from trees that also make good string for roasting meat. They used to put it along the shore by the water to keep them moist, so the willow bark wouldn’t dry up.
You can roast beaver in different ways by the fire; one is called ᓰᐱᑌᔮᔅᑯᐦᐄᐧᐹᓐ / ᓰᐱᑖᔮᔅᑯᐦᐧᐋᑭᓐ, meaning de-boned beaver stretched, and another is called ᐋᐳᑎᓈᐤ / ᐋᐴᑎᓈᐤ, beaver turned inside out and blown after it’s sewn.
Roasting meat by the fire is always the fastest way to cook something.

Now you can boil your food, long ago they didn’t. It was roasting meat by the fire.
There are different kinds of wood used, whatever you have at camp. The tamarack wood ᐧᐋᑎᓈᑲᓂᐦᑎᒄ works well, they burn well. Another kind is poplar wood ᒦᑐᓯᐦᑎᒄ and this is the best dry wood, the fire doesn’t give sparks.
The moose parts were roasted too, the hip ᐅᑕᑯᓐ, the shoulder ᐅᑎᔨ, the arms ᐅᔅᐱᑐᓐᐦ, the bones ᐅᔅᑲᓐᐦ where not all meat was cut off.

Same with a goose, it can be cooked using a roasting stick ᐁᐦ ᒌᔥᑕᐦᐧᐋᑲᓄᐧᐃᑦ or hung to roast using a string ᓴᑲᐧᐹᓐ.

When roasting goose in open fire ᓴᑲᐧᐹᓄᐧᐃᐦᒡ, it was cooked in different ways.
One way is taking all bones out ᓰᐱᑌᔮᔅᑯᐦᐊᐧᐹᓐ. The bones were kept and cooked too.
Another way a goose is cooked is on a roasting stick ᐁᐦ ᒌᔥᑕᐦᐧᐋᑲᓄᐧᐃᑦ.
