Elder Teachings

Elders explain aspects of iiyiyiuiyihtiwin and practices, and offer insights into chischaayihtimuwin passed down through generations.

The word ᐅᔅᒋᐱᒧᐧᐋᑲᓐ / ᐅᔅᒋᐱᒥᐧᐋᑭᓐ is derived from two meanings: "first kill" and "throwing," which are combined into one term.

The term ᐅᔅᒋᐱᒧᐧᐋᑲᓐ / ᐅᔅᒋᐱᒥᐧᐋᑲᓐ refers to a child's first kill achieved by throwing an object at an animal.

This term applies to any instance where a child successfully hunts by throwing an object, whether using a slingshot, bow, or arrow.

Before guns were used, these were the main tools that were used for hunting.

Using bows & arrows were also used to kill big game like a bear and caribou.
