Springboard Programs

Complete CEGEP courses, learn about your culture, and prepare for post-secondary – all from your home community! 

The springboard programs are new, one-year partnership programs offered by John Abbott College and the Cree School Board.

If you are a Secondary V graduate or on track to graduate this year, this is a great opportunity to:

  • Study in your home community, completing courses online and on the land.
  • Deepen your Cree identity through culturally relevant courses created by Cree educators, for Cree students.
  • Gain credits towards your Diploma of College Studies (DCS).

About the Programs

Program Requirements

Open to Cree beneficiaries living in Eeyou Istchee with a Secondary V Diploma. Students who have already graduated and those on track to graduate at the end of the year are encouraged to apply.

Program Delivery

The program is provided online with set class times. A five-day intensive Physical Education course is also offered on the land each semester. In-person tutoring is available in the communities.

Credits

Credits from courses completed are transferable to any English Quebec CEGEP, and will apply towards a Diploma of College Studies (DCS).

Student Supports

Students have access to a loaned laptop, and in-person tutoring. In addition, students can be supported online by the Indigenous Resource Centre and the virtual community.

Financial Assistance

The Cree School Board provide financial support to qualified students, in accordance with our in-community financial assistance policy.

Financial assistance for the Springboards are provided independently from Post-Secondary Student Services and have an internal process.

How to Apply through SRAM

Step 1

Complete the written portion
(motivation letter and short essay)

Applicants must complete the written portion document and upload it to their SRAM application. See Program section below to download the Written Portion Document for your choosen program, Iyeskuwiiu or Nursing.

The written portion includes:

  • A motivation statement (one paragraph)
  • A short essay (250-500 words – topics provided in the document)
Step 2

Submit your SRAM application

Full instructions are available in each program information package.

  1. Go to admission.sram.qc.ca
  2. Select "Apply for admission".
  3. Click on "Continuing education applicant".
    • If you don't have one, create an account with a valid email address (which will be part of your file) and a password. SRAM and the college will use this email address to communicate with you.
  4. Complete the application form. See Program section below for details about what to select for our Iyeskuwiiu and Nursing programs.
  5. After submitting your application, you will see a prompt to upload your documents. This is where you will upload the written portion of your application.

Programs

Iyeskuwiiu Springboard to DCS

(Diploma of College Studies)

Full-time, two-semester program. Begins in August and ends in April.

Students will take up to nine (9) accredited courses in Humanities, Contemporary Issues, Second Language (French), English, and Physical Education (land-based). For a full course listing, please download the program information package.

Applications are now being accepted for the second round. Deadline to apply is midnight, April 24, 2024.

  • Particularity: IYESKUWIIU – for Cree students only
  • Begins on: August 2024

Cree Springboard to Nursing

Full-time, two-semester program. Begins in August and ends in April.

Students will take up to four (4) to six (6) accredited courses in Math, Contemporary Issues, Second Language (French), English, Chemistry, Environmental Science, and Physical Education (land-based). This program aims to provide the prerequisites for entry into the Nursing program and offer additional accredited courses. For a full course listing, please download the program information package.
