Apply now for Iyeskuwiiu, our NEW in-community Springboard to DCS program
Iyeskuwiiu, a CEGEP-level Springboard program customized for Cree students, is now accepting applications for the 2022-2023 school year.
Iyeskuwiiu is a unique, culturally relevant CEGEP-level program offered by Sabtuan Adult Education Services (SAES) in partnership with John Abbott College. The program helps students prepare for post-secondary while deepening their Cree identity. All courses were developed by Cree community members, for Cree students. The courses include Cree Language, Power & Influence in Eeyou Istchee (Humanities), and land-based Physical Education.
"This program truly prepares our students for the future, meeting their unique needs. That means getting them ready for post-secondary, but more importantly, giving them the tools to take hold of their Cree identity, exercise their citizenship, and contribute to the future of their communities."
Credits from Iyeskuwiiu courses are transferable to any Quebec English-language CEGEP, giving students a valuable start to their post-secondary pursuits. Students also receive strong support from the CSB, including a student allowance, a loaned laptop, and access to counselling services. Anyone who has graduated from Secondary V, or who is on track to graduate at the end of this school year, may apply.
Many of the students who are participating in the pilot this year are enjoying the program, and encourage others to apply:
"Each course is amazing. I strongly believe this is the decolonization of our Indigenous minds, taking different aspects from European and Indigenous points of view. It teaches you a lot about who you are; it enlightens your Indigenous mind.
At the same time, it helps you improve your skills such as communication and writing, and gives you that extra time to figure out what you really want to do when you go to college. It’s the perfect opportunity."
